Gardaí are cracking down on retailers offering non-essential items under level 5 constraints.
Over the weekend, they tweeted a number of images of compliance checks throughout a number of various stores.
Under level five restrictions, retail companies can stay open for vital retail purposes only.
The guidelines state: “Retailers with combined retail offering which have discrete spaces for vital and non-essential retail should make arrangements for the separation of appropriate locations.”
Compliance examine Retail Premises today.

Consumer reporter Siobhan Maguire told Newstalk Breakfast Gardaí need to be seen to be keeping larger outlets in check.
” I believe what the Gardaí are doing in terms of checking in on the larger supermarkets is to try and appease the smaller sized merchants rather.
” We’ve an extremely irregular playing field in retail at the minute where the smaller stores are shuttered, the toy shop can’t open, however supermarkets selling toys can still run and are totally practical.”
” Today we have some grocery stores rolling out Christmas presents and wrapping paper and decorations – and you have other shops that are entirely shut down and have to operate on click and collect or go online to attempt and make some kind of a living.
” It appears extremely, really unjust.
” So I do believe the Garda checks were for show, to reveal the smaller sellers ‘Look, we’re doing our finest to try and secure down on bigger retailers making the most of this'”.
However she stated there appears to be a bigger social conscience from customers in this lockdown.
” For the customer, it’s just that little bit of liberty of being able to go into a store and pick up something besides the bread and milk I think that they delight in.
” But I believe there’s far more of a social conscience this time around in lockdown two.
” We all keep in mind in lockdown one where the pallets of paints and the shrubbery were being presented in supermarkets since other shops could not sell them.
” And I think the customer now is a bit peeved if toys are being rolled out in one store, however the small toy store two doors up is closed”.
