Did Saturday Night Live‘s cold open truly simply recommend that no one currently in the U.S. federal government or the people competing to lead it are ill-equipped to deal with the growing threat of the brand-new coronavirus? It sure did, and there’s no reason to believe SNL is incorrect!
A cold open sketch that starts with a drowsy White House interview delivered by Vice President Mike Pence is quickly interrupted by every gamer (for now) in the race to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2020 election. Larry David, Rachel Dratch, and Fred Armisen all return to do their impressions of Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, and Mike Bloomberg, respectively.
However it’s guest host John Mulaney who steals the sketch. He enters previous Vice President Joe Biden’s shoes, wearing a fancy South Carolina sash (as the real Biden logged a win in Saturday’s primary because state) and babbling on about new teeth. Perfect.
The real winner of the cold open, nevertheless, is everybody. Throughout the sketch, SNL‘s authors embeded bits of suggestions that, taken together, reads like a finest practices guide for staying healthy and keeping illness– coronavirus or not!– at bay. Everything starts with washing your damn hands
